iSuppli Pegs The Apple TV’s Parts List At $64

The Apple TV isn’t much more than a Samsung-made A4 processor, 8GB of flash memory, and a connectivity chip. iSuppli says those components along with the casing and power supply only costs $ 63.95. Not too shabby considering the original $ 300 Apple TV contained $ 237 worth of parts and was sold at a 20% manufacturing margin. The new one retails for $ 100, which works out to 35% above the cost of the parts. Of course that’s not pure profit for Apple seeing how the price of the device also covers R&D along with marketing, but at least the parts are cheap and Apple’s margin improved over the previous generation.

Here’s How To Watch Hulu On Google TV

Hulu and Google TV aren’t supposed to get along. You’re not supposed to be able to access the site via the included web browser. But you can. You can watch Hulu on a Google TV unit if you really want to. All it takes is about five seconds of your time — hacking and modding not required.

We have no way of verifying if this actually works as our Google TV units are still in the mail, but according to GadgetWhore.org, all you need to do is change a value in the Google TV backend.

Once changed, Hulu.com and all its lovely videos are unblocked, resulting in Internet video nirvana. Of course this workaround might not be around for long. So let’s keep this quiet, m’kay? I won’t tell anyone if you don’t.

[Thanks for the tip, Nate!]

Boxee Gains United Football League Live Streaming App

Boxee, the social network-y media center for Windows, Mac, and Linux, has a fancy new App that may interest you, particularly if you’re a sports fan. It allows you to watch live games of the United Football League right from within the Boxee software.

The league, which began last year, is made up of five teams, and is aimed at people who either A) just want more football in their life or B) want an alternative to the overproduced, extravagant NFL. Real, “bone-crushing football,” if you will.

Raise your hand if this at all sounds like Vince McMahon’s XFL to you. That was quite literally the first thought that popped into my head. “Oh, boy, all I need to see is the word ‘extreme’ in there and we’re all set.”

The games air (in HD, mind you) via the App at the same time they air on Versus or HDNet.

The first such game that will be streamed via the App will take place tomorrow evening at 11pm.

Neat if you’re a pigskin fan.

Boxee Box Available for Pre-Order, Ships November 10 [Boxee]

The Boxee Box, a custom-built set-top box for running the rather great Boxee software on your HDTV, is shipping on Nov. 10, and available for pre-order through Amazon and other merchants, with retail units offered a week later. It comes with a pretty cool keyboard remote, runs a more polished version of the Boxee Beta, and offers both network and USB connections for playing your own media, along with the usual connections to Hulu, YouTube, Vimeo, and other web video services. Does the Boxee Box have a place in your living room, or are you holding out for other streaming-video-on-TV competitors? [Boxee Blog] More »

Report: Apple TVs Selling Out At Apple Stores Everywhere

According to JMP Research analyst Alax Gauna, many Apple Stores are having trouble keeping the $ 99 Apple TV in stock.

We were not particularly surprised when we couldn’t get our hands on the Apple TV over this past introductory weekend in San Francisco, but when the scarcity persisted into this week it got us to checking and we subsequently learned that stores across the nation were selling out of their inventory on the same day as receipt in Boston, Chicago, New York and Washington D.C.,” he writes, “and online representatives corroborated this strength extends beyond our 20+ store checks.

Nice.

It doesn’t really matter whether the Apple TV is selling because of its $ 99 price tag, feature list or both. All that matters is that next-gen media streamers are finding their way into more homes and that’s good for the whole industry.

The new Apple TV seems to be the product that will move this product group from a niche item to mainstream just in time for the Google TV and Boxee Box launch. There doesn’t have to be a so-called winner here. There are more than enough livingrooms around the globe for several blockbuster products. [via Barrons

Boxee Box Gets Priced: $199

The other players are scrambling to set themselves in opposition to the new Apple TV: earlier this week, Roku dropped their prices preemptively; Amazon is touting 99-cent shows; now, Boxee is pricing their long-awaited Boxee Box. It’s $ 199, and they defend the price in a blog post, saying that people really do want the extra features it offers. I’d tend to agree, but in the end it’s the consumers who will decide it.
